Feeling Connected at Sweet Arrow Lake

“I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.”

As I walked on the trails of Sweet Arrow Lake with my friend Jen, I felt a strong sense of connection and grounding. For the first time that I can remember I felt connected with myself. I felt the ground under my feet, I felt the sun on my face, and the air sweeping over my shoulders. As we walked and talked along the trails that weaved through the park, around and through the waterways, over bridges, and up hills, jumping over puddles and standing near a pond, in the quite afternoon, I realized that I am right where I’m meant to be, in the moment and in life.

Spring is upon us and I’m ready to clear out the negative feelings and bring to light the warm, kind, and generous feelings that will take me towards a better version of myself, a version that is motivated to be the change, to explore the possibilities, and to be open to new and different ideas.

“True happiness is to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future, not to amuse ourselves with either hopes or fears but to rest satisfied with what we have, which is sufficient, for he that is so wants nothing. The greatest blessings of mankind are within us and within our reach. A wise man is content with his lot, whatever it may be, without wishing for what he has not.”

Standing in silence, awaiting the sound of a frog, Jen and I stood by this wetlands area for 10 minutes. As I clicked my camera shutter and slowly moving through the brush, I could tell that I needed to stop moving and be calm for us to hear the sounds we had heard before walking up to the marsh. Stop. Breath. Be Calm. Listen. Smile. It’s that simple. To be in the present, it’s just choosing it.

Connecting with nature in a unique and different way helped me realize that I needed to take that lesson into my life every day.

Stop. Breath. Be Calm. Listen. Smile. Connect to myself. Connect to the ground. Connect to my actions, words, and feelings. Connect to others around me. Connect to feeling my feet on the ground, connect to my breath. Connect.
